GUEST LECTURE – “THE HERITAGE OF YOUTH CULTURE” – HELEN WYSS
The legacy of youth culture encompasses various groups such as the hip-hop, breakdance and graffiti scenes as well as the BMX and skateboarding scenes. What their heritage has in common is that it has similar social and cultural values, which are created at so-called spots, adhere to walls or buildings, are sometimes preserved in situ, but are sometimes only recorded in collective memory or archives due to their ephemeral character. What their legacy also has in common is that it was partly created illegally and contradicts the generally accepted codes of our society. Using the example of the ‘found’ spaces and built places of the skateboard scene, it is shown how this group participates in the creation of a common urban heritage and its preservation through its way of appropriating space.
