Federal Commission for Monument Preservation (EKD)

Archaeological sites, monuments and sites are part of our historical heritage and our building culture. They bear witness to religious, political, economic, social and architectural pasts. In their surviving material with all their traces of time, they provide direct access to the history of human activity, historical events and developments, artistic achievements, social institutions and technical accomplishments. In their physical diversity, monuments shape the designed and built environment. Maintaining, repairing and continuing to build on monuments is part of our culture. Monuments thus also become a contemporary achievement, a testimony to today’s social conditions. Responsible action on monuments requires not only knowledge and respect, but also insight and prudence from all those involved, for example from experts in monument preservation, architecture and craftsmanship, from the owners and from society.

The future needs a past: for over 100 years, the Federal Commission for the Preservation of Historical Monuments (FCMP) has been committed to ensuring this future for our monuments. So that future generations will also be able to question their history on the basis of architectural testimonies that have been handed down as authentically as possible. As an independent, advisory expert commission for the Confederation and cantons, the EKD fulfills an important public mandate.
