Forced welfare measures and out-of-home placements also caused a great deal of suffering in Nidwalden. Those who were poor or did not conform to the usual norms were restricted in their freedom to lead their lives and often had their basic rights violated. This book sheds light on various aspects of this welfare and guardianship regime: life in Nidwalden’s poorhouses and orphanages, administrative institutional care, forced placements and forced adoptions of children.
