PHOTO FOUNDATION SWITZERLAND

The Fotostiftung Schweiz, founded in 1971, is a non-profit foundation under private law that is committed to the preservation, research and communication of photographic works. It primarily collects photographic works relating to Switzerland (Helvetica), from the beginnings of photography to the present day. It considers artistic forms of expression as well as documentary, applied and private forms of photography.

With four to six exhibitions a year, the Fotostiftung Schweiz presents important positions in contemporary and historical photography. In addition to the exhibitions in its own premises in Winterthur, it regularly shows works from its collection in Swiss and international museums.

The Fotostiftung Schweiz is actively involved in the dissemination of knowledge. Through educational formats for schools and private individuals, it promotes visual literacy and skills in the responsible and critical use of photographic images. It issues monographic or thematic publications to make the photographers it represents known to a wider public. In its own photo-historical publications or articles in specialist journals, it is also dedicated to researching Swiss and international photographic history. It operates an online database on which it makes its digitized holdings accessible for research and available for use.

Together with the Fotomuseum Winterthur, the Fotostiftung Schweiz runs a public specialist library with over 30,000 publications on the subject of photography.

Bernard Voïta – Melencolia (01.06.-06.10.2024)

Bernard Voïta’s works are initially reminiscent of montages or collages, but on closer inspection they turn out to be real installations in space. His Melencolia series is being presented comprehensively for the first time at the Fotostiftung Schweiz and is a quintessence of his longstanding balancing act between reality and appearance.

Binia Bill (19.10.2024-26.01.2025)

Binia Bill is today regarded as an important representative of 20th century Swiss photography. Her works are not only a valuable document of the art and cultural scene of her time, but also stand out as independent works that combine the modern visual language of the pre-war period with an individual sensibility.
