PHOTO FOUNDATION SWITZERLAND
Fotostiftung Schweiz, founded in 1971, is committed to the preservation, research and communication of photographic works. It looks after an extensive collection of Swiss photography from 1840 onwards and around 160 important archives of photographers.
On behalf of the Federal Office of Culture, it preserves and safeguards the photographic cultural heritage entrusted to it for future generations. Its unique holdings bear witness to Switzerland’s rich photographic cultural heritage, which it makes accessible through exhibitions, publications and various educational programmes. The publicly accessible Online Image Archive provides an insight into the archives and collections.
Through targeted projects and in collaboration with other institutions, it promotes the scientific processing of its archives and collections, which contributes to basic research into the history of photography, Switzerland’s visual memory and interdisciplinary visual studies.
Together with Fotomuseum Winterthur, Fotostiftung Schweiz runs the publicly accessible photo library. The library covers the history of photography, documents contemporary work, enables research into key topics and includes literature on photographic theory. With over 30,000 publications and around 30 current magazines, it is the most important specialised public library on the subject of photography in Switzerland.
